World No Tobacco Day: In Pakistan, the cancer continues to spread
KARACHI:
Farhan, 32, has lost his father and his grandfather to cancer. Both died in their early 50s. Despite this, Farhan smokes nearly two packets a day. “I started when I was barely 13. It was just about being part accepted into the group,” he recalls. “From a cigarette or two I didn’t even realise when I hit the two-packs-a-day mark.”
The National Health Survey of Pakistan says there are 30 million smokers in the country, nearly half of whom are 25 to 44 years old. In Pakistan, smoking mostly leads to cancers of the oral cavity, voice box, lungs and upper digestive tract. “You do not see many oral cancer cases in developed countries any more but it is tenfold and creating havoc in the sub-continent,” says Dr Sameer Qureshi, who is an associate professor for ear, nose and throat and head and neck surgery at Jinnah hospital.

Anniversary: What if Pakistan did not have the bomb?
Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan has spent the last few years confined by the Pakistan Army to one of his palatial Islamabad residences where he whiles away his days writing weekly columns in newspapers. This venerable metallurgist, who claims paternity rights over Pakistan’s bomb, says it alone saves Pakistan. In a recent article, he wistfully wrote: “If we had had nuclear capability before 1971, we would not have lost half of our country – present-day Bangladesh – after disgraceful defeat.”

Facebook and Spotify to stream music: Forbes
SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook and Spotify are collaborating on a streaming music service at the world's largest online social network, according to a report Wednesday by business magazine Forbes.
A Facebook spokesman told that it had no news to announce on that front, but pointed out co-founder Mark Zuckerberg commenting at a G8 summit that the California company is interested in making the music and film industries more social.
Facebook members can already use an application to share with friends what songs they are listening to at Spotify.
A Forbes story based on unnamed sources reported that Facebook is testing a service that would allow songs from Spotify's vast library of music to be streamed to members of the social network.
Facebook is not out to get into music or film businesses but it is working with companies that create entertainment content to make their services more social, Zuckerberg said at a G8 forum in Paris.
Titles such as "FarmVille" by Zynga, made for play online with friends at Facebook, are part of a hot "social games" trend and Zuckerberg said that similar potential exists with news, music and films.
Early this month, Swedish music streaming service Spotify launched an application enabling users to synchronize playlists and songs purchased through its service with Apple's iPod, a clear challenge to Apple's iTunes.
