Afridi withdraws petition against PCB

Karachi: Former Pakistan Cricket team captain Shahid Afrdi withdrew his petition against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in the Sindh High Court on Wednesday following his meeting with the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt which took place on Tuesday in Islamabad to settle the dispute out of the court.

According to media reports the PCB has given Afridi the No Objection Certificate (NOC) which he needed to play for Hampshire and later in the Sri Lanka Premier League.

Twin bomb blasts kill 50 in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Twin bomb blasts at a crowded Khyber supermarket killed at least 32 people and injured more than 80 late on Saturday, Geo News reported.

The explosions took place in the Khyber Super Market, which is surrounded by residential flats for students, shops, a fruit juices kiosk and a hotel.   

According to reports, at least 32 people were killed and more than 80 injured in the twin bomb blasts. The condition of several injured is said to be critical.

SC orders removal of IGP, DG Rangers in 3 days

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) ordered on Friday to remove DG Rangers Sindh and IG Police Sindh within three days, Geo News reported.

The SC Thursday took suo moto notice of cold blooded killing of young man by Rangers personnel and summoned DG Rangers Sindh Maj. Gen. Chaudhry Ejaz, Sindh Chief Secretary Abdul Subhan Memon, IG Sindh Fayyaz Leghari and Provincial and Federal Home Secretaries for today's hearing.

A five-member larger bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary heard the case.

Two Rangers men handed over to police

KARACHI: Rangers authorities have handed over two of its personnel to the police involved in the extrajudicial killing of a young man in Karachi outside park Wednesday evening, Geo News reported.

Six personnel of Sindh Rangers were in the mobile deputed outside the park and can be seen in the video released late Wednesday but only two of them were handed over to the police.

Less than 20 cigarettes pack to be banned in pakistan

Federal Health Minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada said that ban would be imposed from Oct 1.


Addressing a seminar, Pirzada said that Pakistan was among 40 countries that ratified an agreement to make the country free of smoking. He said that ban on sale of less than 20 cigarettes packet will help reduce sale among youth and low income groups.

Farhan, 32, has lost his father and his grandfather to cancer. Both died in their early 50s. Despite this, Farhan smokes nearly two packets a day. “I started when I was barely 13. It was just about being part accepted into the group,” he recalls. “From a cigarette or two I didn’t even realise when I hit the two-packs-a-day mark.”

The National Health Survey of Pakistan says there are 30 million smokers in the country, nearly half of whom are 25 to 44 years old. In Pakistan, smoking mostly leads to cancers of the oral cavity, voice box, lungs and upper digestive tract. “You do not see many oral cancer cases in developed countries any more but it is  tenfold and creating havoc in the sub-continent,” says Dr Sameer Qureshi, who is an associate professor for ear, nose and throat and head and neck surgery at Jinnah hospital.
