Oxford English Dictionary with OMG! LOL!

Oxford English Dictionary, which is the de facto source on all words currently being used in the English language, has released its latest 2011 edition which interestingly contains new words (not words in the traditional sense) such as:
  • LOL – (Laughing Out Loud)
  • OMG – (Oh My God or Oh My Gosh)
  • IMHO - (In My Humble/Honest Opinion)
  • TMI – (Too Much Information)
  • BFF – (Best Friends Forever)
The dictionary also featured a new use of “heart” (♥) as a verb for example, I heart/love chillopedia.
Further, the OED research revealed the origins of these words:
Our first quotation for OMG is from a personal letter from 1917; the letters LOLhad a previous life, starting in 1960, denoting an elderly woman (or ‘little old lady’; see LOL n./1); and the entry for FYI [FYI phr., adj., andn.], for example, shows it originated in the language of memoranda in 1941.
Principal editor Graeme Diamond said on the dictionary’s website:
This update may be the first English usage to develop via the medium of T-shirts and bumper sticker.
